Man United edge past nine-man Fulham in messy FA Cup quarter-final
MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Two Fulham players and manager Marco Silva were sent off in five frantic minutes against Manchester United as their FA Cup dream fell apart on Sunday, courtesy of a 3-1 defeat no one saw coming.
Leading 1-0 in the quarter-final at Old Trafford, the game was tied after United were awarded a penalty when Willian headed down Jadon Sancho.
Aleksandar Mitrovic put the visitors ahead in the 50th minute.
Sancho looked to be level until Willian blocked the line.
VAR asked referee Chris Kavanagh to review the incident on the pitch-side monitor, which clearly showed Willian using his arm to deflect the shot.
Silva was shown a red for tackling on the touchline and Willian was then sent off for handball, a professional foul. Mitrovic was shown another red for angrily lunging at the referee.
Bruno Fernandes scored from the spot in the 75th minute and Marcel Sabitzer gave United a 2-1 lead in the 77th. Fernandez suffered another injury.
Victory means United will face Brighton and Hove Albion, who beat Grimsby Town 5-0 the previous Sunday, in the semi-finals. The other semi-final will be between Manchester City and Sheffield United. The games will be played at Wembley Stadium on April 22 and can be watched on Sportsnet.
