Lyon condemns online racist abuse aimed at Houssem Aouar

LYON, France – French soccer club Lyon has condemned the online racist abuse suffered by the midfielder. Cough over After he was selected to represent Algeria, although he had previously played for the French national team.

Aouar, 24, has French and Algerian nationality and decided to switch to play for Algeria last week. He posted a photo on Instagram of himself wearing Algeria’s national jersey.

“L’OL (Lyon) extends its support to @HoussemAouar, along with all other people who are victims of acts of racism and discrimination because of their origins and life choices,” Lyon posted on Twitter, which “condemns hatred ” also said.

Aouar once played for France in a friendly against Ukraine three years ago. He has represented France at youth level and with the Under-21 team.

Aouar, who was jeered by some of his home fans during a league match against Nantes last Friday, posted a screenshot on Instagram on Wednesday showing some of the racist abuse he received.

Last November, he posted a photo of himself holding up a red card on Twitter to join the campaign against cyberbullying.

He was one of the few players to come through Lyon’s prestigious youth academy, scoring 46 goals in 251 appearances for Lyon.

His contract with the seven-time French champions expires in June.
